NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will end a three-game road swing Thursday when it welcomes Lamar to the William R. Johnson Coliseum for the first home Southland Conference game of the season. The Lumberjacks (7-5, 0-2) are 3-2 in SLC home openers under head coach Danny Kaspar. Thursday's game is the first of two straight at home and is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
LAST GAME: SFA fell to 0-2 in conference play and lost its third straight game with a 75-73 setback at Southeastern Louisiana. The Lumberjacks played most of the game without the services of senior point guard Marcus Clark, who was injured in the first half. Despite Clark's absence, SFA managed to keep the Lions within reach. In the game's closing minutes, the Lumberjacks twice shaved SLU's lead to one point, but could not pull ahead.
VS. LAMAR: Lamar leads the all-time series against SFA, 21-20. The Lumberjacks are 4-4 against the Cardinals in the regular season under head coach Danny Kaspar. Lamar has won six of the last 10 regular-season meetings between the two teams. The Lumberjacks defeated Lamar, 70-60, in their only game last season.
THE CARDINALS: Lamar enters Thursday's game at 8-7 for the season and in fifth place in the Southland Conference standings with a 1-1 league mark. The Cardinals are coming off an 83-58 win at Texas State.
THE COACHES: Danny Kaspar is in his sixth season as head coach of the Lumberjacks. Including a nine-year stint as head coach at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Kaspar is 302-121 (.714) over his 14-year coaching career. Kaspar has guided the Lumberjacks to an 83-69 (.546) mark during his tenure. Lamar head coach Billy Tubbs is in his 31st year of coaching and his third in a second tour of duty with the Cardinals. He is 632-333 all-time.
