NACOGDOCHES - After coming off a perfect weekend at the Cyclone Classic at Iowa State, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team is back on the friendly road when it travels to Tulsa to participate in the Crowne Plaza Invitational. This season, SFA is 5-1 on the road.
After dropping the first game of the season, the Ladyjacks are looking for their sixth straight win on Friday, when they face Grambling State at 5 p.m. On Saturday, SFA will take on Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m. before taking on Tulsa that evening at 7 p.m.
SFA vs. Grambling: The Ladyjacks and Lady Tigers have not met up on the court since 1992. But before then, they have faced each other in five matches, in which SFA carries a 5-0 record over Grambling State.
SFA vs. UL-Lafayette: In a nine match history against the Ragin' Cajuns, the Ladyjacks have a demanding record of 9-0. The last win came in September of 2003 by a score of 3-2.
SFA vs. Tulsa: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane is the only team the Ladyjacks will face this weekend that has a winning record against them. SFA is 0-2 against Tulsa, with their last win coming in September of 2003.
About Grambling: The Lady Tigers were picked finish first in the Southwestern Atlantic Conference but have had a tough 0-3 start to the 2005 season.
About UL-Lafayette: The Ragin' Cajuns are 2-3 stepping into the tournament at Tulsa.
About Tulsa: Tulsa has a 5-1 record after beating Cincinnati and Texas-Pan American this last weekend. The Golden Hurricane holds a 3-1 record on their home court. Sophomore Kassiana Urnau is leading the team in kills with 66, averaging 3.67 a game, so far this season. She also has 10 service aces. Senior libero, Evyn Willis has 99 digs on the year.
SFA Perfect in Iowa: The Ladyjacks competed at the Cyclone Classic at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa last weekend and brought home the tournament title after posting a 4-0 record.
Junior libero, Stephanie Figgers was named the Cyclone Classic MVP after posting 84 digs, an average of 5.25 for the 16 games.
In the four matches, sophomore Jami Hill collected 10 services aces and 53 digs. Her efforts earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Joining Hill on the All-Tournament team was sophomore Traci Rohde, who had 58 kills, averaging 3.62 a game with a .305 attack percentage, and had 14 total blocks on the weekend.
Ladyjack POWs: Juniors Stephanie Figgers and Laura Cramer were named Players of the Week by the Southland Conference for the week of August 22-August 27.
Cramer had 22 kills against Wichita State and totaled 40 for the weekend. She also had 21 digs and four total blocks.
Figgers had 42 digs in two matches against Houston and Wichita State.
Schedule Change: The games scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17 against Southeastern Louisiana at Hammond and Nicholls State at Thibodaux have been rescheduled to be played in Nacogdoches due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Ladyjacks will take on the Lady Lions on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and will face the Colonels on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.
