NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks stormed back from a weekend off to sweep the Northwestern State Lady Demons in Southland Conference play Tuesday night at Shelton Gymnasium.
After having three days off because of Hurricane Rita, the Ladyjacks proved a little time off doesn't hurt.
"We had three days off," said head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We had practice on Sunday; we needed a day to get back in the swing of things and get the rust off in preparation for Northwestern. And I think a few days off was a positive thing."
Riding the arm of senior Lauren Stevens, who led both teams in kills with 11, SFA took game 1, 30-25 and never let the Lady Demons recover as the Ladyjacks finished the sweep, 30-20 and 30-18.
"We were just waiting for Lauren to explode," Humphreys said about Stevens, who set her season-high in kills and had a .400 attack percentage, "We put her in a new position as a senior and she's done things in spurts. She had a great match."
Sophomore Traci Rohde set her season-high in blocks with six as the Ladyjacks out-blocked the Lady Demons, 11-3. Sophomore J.J. Jones had 34 assists to go with junior Stephanie Figgers' 15 digs.
The Lady Demons were held to a .063 hitting percentage, the second lowest allowed by the Ladyjacks this season.
SFA improved its record to 11-2, and the Ladyjacks are now a perfect 4-0 in SLC play. Northwestern State fell to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
"When we came back on Sunday, I asked them if they liked days off," said Humphreys, "I said they needed to show me that they liked days off and they came out to prove a point."
The Ladyjacks will host Sam Houston State on Friday, Sept. 30 in SLC action at Shelton Gymnasium.
