NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (7-2) were looking to one more weekend on the road before they returned home for their home opener on Sept. 20 against Texas-San Antonio.
However, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has forced them to return home and change the venue of their Southland Conference opener.
In matches originally scheduled to be played in Hammond, La. and Thibodaux, La., Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State will be traveling to Nacogdoches to take on the Ladyjacks on Friday and Saturday.
SFA will face off with Southeastern on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. before taking on Nicholls on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. Both matches will be held at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA vs. Southeastern: SFA carries a commanding record over this SLC foe. The Ladyjacks are 20-3 in matches against the Lady Lions dating back to 1984. In 2004, SFA won both matches against Southeastern by scores of 3-0 and 3-1.
SFA vs. Nicholls: Against the Colonels, the Ladyjacks hold a 24-4 all-time win record. One of those four losses came last season, when SFA and Nicholls split their two matches, each taking a 3-1 win.
About Southeastern: The Lady Lions have a 3-3 overall record before stepping into conference play. Keri Hamblin is leading the pack with 56 kills while Megan Sutherland leads in digs with 83. Chelsie Cude is tops for Southeastern in assists with 172.
About Nicholls: Because of Hurricane Katrina, the Nicholls State volleyball team has been idle since Aug. 26. Their only match came against Tulane when they lost, 3-0. This is the Colonels' first season under head coach Chris Laird.
Cards for Katrina: The Ladyjacks will be collecting "Cards for Katrina" at both matches this weekend. Donations will be accepted in the form of gift cards and will be distributed to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Ladyjack POWs: Junior libero, Stephanie Figgers, and junior outside hitter, Laura Cramer, were named the Aeropostale Southland Conference Players of the week for the second straight week after winning four straight matches against Drake, South Dakota State, Montana and Iowa State at the Cyclone Classic in Ames, Iowa.
Figgers was named the Cyclone Classic MVP after posting 84 digs, an average of 5.25 for the 16 games at the tournament held at Iowa State.
Cramer posted 71 kills in the four matches, averaging 4.44 kills per game with a .281 attack percentage. She also had 38 digs and 10 total blocks.
The duo were also the only two Ladyjacks named to the All-Tournament Team after they led SFA to a 3-1 performance at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Tulsa.
The Ladyjacks beat Grambling State and Louisiana-Lafayette before falling to Tulsa and having their seven-game win-streak snapped.
