NACOGDOCHES - Preseason camp has ended for the 2005 version of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team and now it is on to game week preparation. The `Jacks open the 2005 season Thursday Sept. 1, against Henderson State. The game against the Reddies is slated to kickoff at 7 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium. The moment that first-year head coach Robert McFarland and his staff have been preparing for since the day they stepped on campus has finally arrived.
"This is an exciting time of year," said first-year head coach Robert McFarland. "Nine months ago when this whole process started, this game seemed so far away and now it's right around the corner. It's exciting to get this opportunity and I'm excited for our players."
The Lumberjacks hit the turf at Homer Bryce Stadium Sunday for one of their final practices before the Reddies come calling on Thursday night. One of the strength's of the SFA football team from spring ball throughout preseason drills has been the secondary and according to McFarland that hasn't changed.
"When I got to Nacogdoches, the returners in the secondary were considered one of the strong points," said McFarland. "After going through the spring, I thought they were still the strong point of the team. I think through recruiting, both at the high school level and with our incoming transfers, we've strengthened that position even more. The secondary is the strength, of not only our defense, but probably our whole team. I'm excited about watching those guys play. We have a lot of speed in that area and they really play well together."
