WACO, Texas - Freshman midfielder Amanda Lackey scored late in the first half, and the Stephen F. Austin soccer team made the goal stand up, as the Ladyjacks posted their first win of the 2005 season with a 1-0 shutout of Baylor on Sunday.
Lackey's goal came on a penalty kick in the 41st minute, and the SFA defense took care of the rest. Led by senior goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki's six saves, SFA turned away 13 Lady Bear shots to earn the victory.
Two days after recording only two shots in their season-opening loss at Texas A&M, the Ladyjacks went on the offensive, firing 12 shots at the Baylor goal.
"It took us the first half to really get into a rhythm," SFA head coach Jaime Frias said. "I think the last 10 minutes of the first half and into the second half we got into a rhythm. We started combining on our attacks, and that was something I really liked.
"It was good to see us get a win against a quality opponent like Baylor," Frias continued. "We had great performances by Camren Norris and Amanda Lackey. This is going to be great for us to build on and get some momentum."
The Ladyjacks (1-1) will resume play Friday with a game against Arkansas-Little Rock. The contest is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark.
