NACOGDOCHES - Day 21 of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football fall camp had the players out on the field for a 9 a.m. workout as the `Jacks head into the final week of practice. SFA opens against Henderson State on Thursday Sept. 1, in Homer Bryce Stadium.
With the season-opener just a week away the coaching staff is closing in on its starters at each position. First-year head coach Robert McFarland noted that the wide receiver position is pretty much locked in, while there are still some decisions to be made at the running back spots.
"Our receivers have come back intact from spring practice," said McFarland. "We have a lot of speed and athleticism at this position. Although this group is young in experience, they had a great spring and summer, and continue to do a good job in preseason drills. We are pretty well set on the starters at this position.
"Coming out of the spring the running back was an unsettled position. We made some changes, along with the influx of freshmen and transfers, which have totally changed this position in a positive way. Through our recruiting we have added some speed and explosiveness which will benefit our offense," added McFarland.
The running backs are a youthful group with a ton of talent, which should give Lumberjack fans plenty of reasons to cheer over the next few years.
"We have a good mix of young talent to along with some talented returners," said McFarland. "We expect these guys to have a major impact this season."
Notes: More than 700 people showed up to meet and cheer on the Lumberjack football team Tuesday night at the annual `Meet the Lumberjacks.' The event was never more appropriate than this season as fans were introduced to new SFA Athletics Director Robert Hill, first-year head coach Robert McFarland, his coaching staff and 44 new members of the Lumberjack football team.
The `Jacks open the season against Henderson State on Thursday Sept. 1. The game is slated to kick-off at 7 p.m., from Homer Bryce Stadium.
