NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team opens the 2005 season this weekend with road games against in-state powers Texas A&M and Baylor. SFA will kick off the season Friday in College Station, Texas with an 8 p.m. game against Texas A&M. On Sunday, the Ladyjacks will travel to Waco, Texas to take on Baylor. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Jaime Frias, SFA is looking to carry over the momentum from the previous two seasons, when the Ladyjacks put together the most dominant two-year run in school history. The team recorded 26 wins in that span, capturing the 2003 Southland Conference tournament title and winning the SLC regular-season crown last season.
Frias returns a wealth of experienced talent from last year's conference championship team. The Ladyjacks welcome back 13 letterwinners, eight of whom saw action as starters in 2004. First-team All-SLC performers from that squad include senior defender Kim Gray, senior goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki and junior forward Shahin Pabani. Junior defender Andrea Ramirez was a second-team All-SLC selection.
If the Ladyjacks hope to continue their recent success, they'll have to find a way to do so away from home. SFA will stay on the road for the season's first six games before meeting Louisiana Tech in the home opener on Friday, Sept. 16. That game is set for a 7 p.m. start from the SFA Intramural Complex. The Ladyjacks open SLC play on Sept. 25 in Natchitoches, La. with a game against Northwestern State.
