NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team held a 70-play scrimmage Saturday morning at Homer Bryce Stadium. The scrimmage pitted the `Jacks' No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense and second-team offense and against the second-team defense.
The quarterbacks did a good job of directing the offense, as senior Zeke Dixon finished the game 11-of-15 (73 percent) for 157 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore Danny Southall was 12-of-18 (67 percent) for 126 yards and one touchdown. Transfer James Battle went 4-of-10 (40 percent) for 86 yards and two scores. For the day, the Lumberjack quarterbacks were 28-of-45 (62 percent) for 370 yards and seven touchdowns.
The SFA signal-callers spread the ball around to 12 different receivers on the day including sophomore Tyrell Williams who had five catches for 102 and two scores. Freshman running back Damian Perkins added four catches for 44 yards. Freshman Lester Simmons also caught four passes for 36 yards, while sophomore Chance Dennis added three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Perkins also led the Lumberjacks' ground attack Saturday morning carrying the ball 11 times for 58 yards, including a 34-yard scamper. Sophomore Louie Runnels had seven carries for 27 yards.
"We did some things, execution-wise on offense that were good to see," said McFarland. "But we've got to do them closer to the goal line. We looked really good between the 30s, but we've got to find a way to keep those drives going and get it in the end zone."
The Lumberjack defense continued with its bend-but-don't-break philosophy forcing the SFA offense to stall inside the 30-yard line. The defense was led by junior Keldrick Holman who finished the game with seven tackles, including one for loss. Senior Andre Williams recorded seven tackles in the game including one for a seven-yard loss. Three `Jacks recorded a sack in the morning scrimmage led by Roger Sutterfield sack for an eight-yard loss. Transfer Andrew Fleck and senior Ryan Luedecke also added a sack. The defense recorded nine tackles for a loss, including three quarterback sacks.
"Once again, I was definitely pleased with the performance of our first-team defense," said McFarland. "They've started strong and haven't let up one practice. I was, however, displeased with the number of penalties on both sides of the ball, mainly with our lines, staying onsides."
The `Jacks will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field Monday morning for a 9 a.m., workout.
