PLANO, Texas - The Southland Conference released a new student-athlete citizenship award that will be named after retiring Stephen F. Austin Athletics Director Steve McCarty announced SLC Commissioner Tom Burnett Wednesday afternoon. The Steve McCarty Award will begin being awarded in the 2005-06 academic year.
"This is truly a humbling experience," said McCarty. "I am honored that my colleagues over the past 20 years would think enough of my career to name this award after me. I have been fortunate to be surrounded at SFA with quality individuals which has made my job that much more enjoyable."
The Steve McCarty Award will recognize a Southland Conference male and female student-athlete who exhibits outstanding qualities in citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership and community service. In addition to the overall conference recipients, others nominated will also be honored with campus awards.
"We are absolutely thrilled to honor Steve McCarty with this student-athlete citizenship award," said Burnett. "There's no one who cares as much for student-athletes than Steve does, not only his own teams, but for every student-athlete in the Southland Conference. In addition, there may not be a better citizen around. Steve's devotion to his faith, his love for his family, his patriotism and his dedication to SFA are proof positive of that. The Southland Conference will miss Steve's day-to-day presence when he retires, but this honor will ensure that his name is forever associated with the league."
During his time in Nacogdoches, Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletics have seen success across the board. The football team has earned two NCAA I-AA playoff berths, three NCAA Volleyball Championship appearances and two NIVC appearances, 14 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship appearances, an appearance in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional, three Southland Conference soccer titles, an NCAA Soccer Championship appearance, six SLC cross country titles and three conference track and field titles.
