NACOGDOCHES - The 2004 version of the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team set the standard by winning a share of the Southland Conference title. This spring the Ladyjacks began laying the foundation for another successful run in 2005.
"I'm really pleased with the progress that the team made this spring," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We gave each player 1-2 areas to really focus on knowing that if all 11 players significantly improved in one area that would have a tremendously positive impact on our team. We accomplished that goal and we are excited about the upcoming fall season."
With the graduation of two All-Southland Conference players, including league MVP Brittany Burton, the Ladyjacks needed other players to step up to new leadership roles and coach Humphreys liked what she saw. SFA had strong showings in all four of its spring tournaments recording victories over Southland Conference opponents Texas State, Texas-Arlington, Lamar, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and McNeese State. The Ladyjacks also knocked off a few non-conference opponents including SMU and West Texas A&M.
"When I look at the team that is returning as well as the newcomers, I see a very talented team with probably more depth than ever before," said Humphreys. "We have very high expectations heading into the fall and with continued hard work and focus on the task at hand, we will accomplish our goals."
The Ladyjacks will kick-off the 2005 season on Sept. 2, in Aimes, Iowa, against Montana.
