Offense Sharp In First Scrimmage

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Lumberjack head coach Robert McFarland put the 'Jacks through a two-hour scrimmage Saturday and said afterward he was pleased with what he saw on both sides of the ball. SFA ran just over 100 plays in the first of three planned scrimmages during spring practice.
"I was pleased with some of the things we were able to do on both sides of the football. There were missed assignments and a few busted plays, but overall I was very pleased with the execution on offense and the way the defense responded later in the scrimmage," said McFarland.
The Lumberjack offense managed to score seven times during the workout with senior quarterback Zeke Dixon leading the way offensively. Dixon finished the day 17-21-0 for 180 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored on a 65-yard touchdown reception from Cedric Reescano. Dixon c completed 15 straight passes during one stretch.
Chance Dennis led all receivers with six catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on a two-yard pass over the middle from Dixon and closed out the scrimmage with a 60-yard scoring play from Danny Southall. Tyrell Williams also added four catches for 42 yards and had a 26-yard touchdown from Southall.
Southall, a sophomore from Hitchcock, finished by completing eight of 20 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He also added one carry for six yards. Dallas Santiago was 2-2 passing for 18 yards and Rodney Freeman completed three of four attempts for 42 yards.
Gary Allen, a sixth year senior awaiting an appeal from the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility, picked up 46 yards on 12 carries. He scored on a two-yard run midway through the workout. Lester Simmons led SFA on the ground with 92 yards rushing on seven carries and scored on an 80-yard scoring play early in the scrimmage.
"I thought the offense executed very well early in the scrimmage, but then the defense really responded and got a number of three and outs later on. We were able to accomplish most of the things we wanted to do coming into this first scrimmage," said McFarland.
The Lumberjacks will return to practice Monday and Wednesday and have their second scrimmage of the spring Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the stadium. ™
