NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack pitching gave up only three hits in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday, but the problem was Islander pitching gave up only two hits. TAMU-CC (34-8) shutout the Ladyjacks (15-25) 1-0 behind a complete game performance from Sarah Pauley. Julie Morse and Nicole Carter combined to allow only one run on three hits, but the lone run would prove to be all Pauley would need to move to 29-4 on the year.
Tara Hersey and Nicole Carter were the only Ladyjacks to pick up hits in game one off Pauley as she struck out 10 and walked a pair of batters.
The Islanders scored their only run off Morse in the top of the first following a lead-off walk. The runner moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch before scoring on a base hit.
SFA advanced runners to third base on two occasions but could not come up with a hit to plate a run.
The Islanders scored a run in the top of the first inning in game two to move out to a 1-0 lead, but the Ladyjacks answered right away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
SFA scored its runs when Carrie Woydziak reached after being hit by a pitch. Kristina Swart then reached on a fielder's choice followed by a walk to Ragen Rutherford. Swart stole third base and Rutherford moved to second before Nicole Carter came through with a two-out single to score the runs.
TAMU-Corpus Christi broke the game open in the fourth inning with a five run rally highligted by a solo home run off the bat of Megan Hansen to open the inning off freshman pitcher Kaitlin Morrison (2-3). Nakkiah Neash followed with a double to left center knocking Morrison out of the game in favor of Carter. The Islanders scored five runs on six hits in the inning.
Tara Hersey hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Ladyjacks to within two, 7-5. TAMU-CC then went to Pauley for the save as she came on in relief to retire the side with three strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks return to Southland Conference play Saturday, against UT-Arlington in Arlington with game one of a doubleheader set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
