NACOGDOCHES - The SFA Ladyjack softball team was shutout 5-0 in the third game of their series with Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at Coy Simms Softball Complex. Sam Houston State swept the three-game series from the Ladyjacks, outscoring SFA 23-3 in the series. The loss makes SFA 4-11 overall and 1-5 in Southand Conference play.
Unlike the first two games of the series, there was no scoring by either team in the first or second innings. That changed in the top of the third when Sam Houston's Laura Boone singled in Lisa Marek. A couple of plays later the Bearkats capitalized on a Ladyjack miscue in the field that enabled them to score another run, giving them a 2-0 advantage.
SFA had a chance to respond to those runs in the bottom of the third with Kristina Swart on third and Carrie Woydziak on second and no outs. The Ladyjacks couldn't muster any runs with that start as Bearkats' pitcher Whitney Heath got out of the jam by sitting down the next three SFA batters.
Heath recorded a complete game, five hit shutout. SFA pitcher Julie Morse took the loss after going four innings and surrendering four earned runs. Traci Moore relieved Morse and pitched three innings of shutout ball for the Ladyjacks.
Swart, the leadoff hitter for SFA, went 2-2 and also drew a walk from Heath.
SFA returns to action next Wednesday against Centenary at Coy Simms Softball Complex. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
