DENTON, Texas- The North Texas softball team had its four-game winning streak snapped despite five extra-base hits in a 10-8 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday afternoon at Denia Park.
The Mean Green (7-15) allowed five runs in the first inning, and Stephen F. Austin (5-15) went on to score runs in all but two of the seven innings.
The Ladyjacks' offense used four doubles and two home runs to stay ahead of the Mean Green. Nicole Carter posted a home run and a three-run double to lead the Ladyjacks at the plate. Carter's double in the first inning contributed to the SFA's 5-0 early lead.
Four extra-base hits in the second and third innings helped North Texas come within one run of SFA, 7-6. Sophomore Christen Jonse knocked in two runs in back-to-back innings with a single and a double, followed by classmate Katy Maxey who posted her second triple of the season and knocked in two runs with the hit.
With Heather Bostic's triple in the third inning, North Texas recorded two triples in the same game for the second time this season. The first time occured in the Mean Green's first game against SFA.
A home run by Lee Lara in the fourth inning extended SFA's lead to two runs, 9-7, a lead which the 'Jacks would not relinquish for the rest of the game. North Texas had an opportunity in the seventh inning after freshman Kristina Fowler started a rally with her first career home run. Sophomore Susan Waters followed with a single, but North Texas could not push across another run in falling to SFA.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday afternoon in Fayetteville, Ark. as they take on the UNiversity of Arkansas in a non-conference doubleheader.
