The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team (4-14, 1-7) dropped both ends of a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon in San Marcos to Texas State by scores of 5-3 and 8-7. The three game series concludes with a single game Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Texas State scored first in the opener with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning off the bat of Katie Trahan. Trahan's blast followed a one-out walk issued by starter Julie Morse. Morse then got two ground ball outs to end the inning.
SFA bounced right back with three runs in the top of the second when Lee Lara led off the inning after being hit by a pitch. Ragen Rutherford then moved her to second with a sacrifice before a walk to Kristina Swart put two on with one out. With two outs, Tara Hersey singled to drive in a run and Swart also came in on an error by Texas State. Jessica Tullos then doubled to center to give SFA a 3-2 lead. Those hits were the only hits SFA could manage off Texas State's Katie Trahan as she struck out 10 in seven innings of work.
The Ladyjacks held the lead until Texas State added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to move the 5-3 win.
Both teams scored in the opening frame of game two as the Ladyjack bats came alive to score seven runs on seven hits. Carrie Woydziak went 4-4 with two runs scored in the second game while Ragen Rutherford was 1-3 with two RBI. Hersey also went 1-3 in game two with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Trailing 4-2 going to the top of the fourth inning, the Ladyjacks rallied for a three run inning to take a 5-4 lead, but Texas State answered with a four run outburst in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. The Ladyjacks added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but fell short, 8-7.
