NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team dropped its Southland Conference opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Natchitoches, La. The Lady Demons recorded a 5-2 victory in the first game and a 9-1 win in the second game. The Ladyjacks fall to 3-8 (.273) on the season and 0-2 in SLC play.
SFA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first game behind a Jessica Tullos third-inning homerun, but the Lady Demons responded with a five-run fourth to put the game away. The Ladyjacks Nicole Carter took the loss after going three-and-a-third innings, surrendering all five runs on six hits. She also recorded three strikeouts.
Tullos finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Carrie Woydziak was 2-for-4 at the plate with and RBI and a run scored.
The second game was similar to the first due to the fact that SFA scored first and the Lady Demons responded with a big inning. The Ladyjacks' lone run in the second game came when Nicole Parrett singled in Woydziak from second base in the first inning.
Northwestern State tied the game with a run in the second and then blew the game open with a five-run third inning. The Lady Demons tacked on three more runs in their half of the sixth inning to ice the victory.
Traci Moore took the loss for SFA after going five and two-third innings, surrendering eight runs on 14 hits. Moore struck out three batters.
Woydziak went 1-for-2 with a run scored in the second game, while Parrett recorded the Ladyjacks only other hit.
SFA returns to action Sunday afternoon when it closes out the three-game series at Northwestern State with a 1 p.m., contest.
