
Softball Falls To North Texas

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- North Texas third baseman Susan Waters went 2-for-3 with two home runs Tuesday afternoon to lead the Mean Green (2-10) past the SFA Ladyjacks (3-6) 8-5 in a non-conference match-up in Nacogdoches. Waters had three runs batted in for the Eagles to lead a North Texas attack that collected 14 hits off SFA pitching.
SFA outfielders Carrie Woydziak and Kristina Swart picked up two hits each as the Ladyjacks ended with five runs on seven hits off a pair of North Texas pitchers. Kristen Gabourie homered for the Ladyjacks, her second of the year.
North Texas roughed up freshman Kaitlin Morrison early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on four hits. With one out, UNT had back-to-back bunt singles followed by a ground out to the mound. Another single up the middle scored the first run, then a triple off the bat of Stephanie Cranmer drove in two more runs to put UNT up 3-0 going to the bottom of the first inning.
UNT added two more runs in the top of the third on three hits to go ahead, 5-0 before SFA pushed across a run in the bottom of the third on Gabourie's lead-off homer to left. The Eagles added another run in the top of the sixth and SFA countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits. The first SFA run scored on a bases loaded walk to Jessica Tullos and the second run scored when Ragen Rutherford was hit by a pitch. Rutherford was hit by a pitch twice in the game.
SFA added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after Rutherford led off by reaching after being hit the second time. Carrie Woydziak followed with a triple to score the run and eventually scored when Tara Hersey hit a shot to third on which Waters threw high to first. Hersey went to second on the throw but was stranded to end the game.
Morrison worked three innings for SFA giving up five runs on seven hits. Traci Moore came on in relief and went four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and struck out two.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader with Prairie View A&M beginning at noon at the Coy Sims Softball Complex. ™
