NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (11-12, 5-7) dropped their third straight Saturday evening as Southeastern Louisiana (19-7, 10-2) led wire-to-wire in handing SFA a 52-41 setback. SFA has now lost five of its last seven games.
SFA managed to tie the score only once, 2-2 on a layup by Hank Rivers with 18:55 left in the first half. Southeastern Louisiana then went on a 13-3 run that stretched the lead to double digits at 15-5 with 12:05 left in the first half and maintained that advantage for much of the period. The 'Jacks did put together one challenge and whittled the lead back to five points on a layup by Tim Simon with 4:51 left, but SLU quickly rebuilt the lead back to nine. The Lions went into the half leading by 11, 31-20.
Nate Lofton lead all scorers in the game with 14 points while Jonathan Patton added 13 and Ricky Woods had 11 for Southeastern Louisiana. SFA was led by Leonard Brown's eight points with Taylor Moore adding seven and Rodrigo Segantim adding six off the bench.
The Lions built their first half lead after shooting 51.9 percent from the field (14-27) while holding SFA to only eight-of-22 (.364). It got worse for the Lumberjacks in the second half as the Lions allowed only seven-of-24 (.292) from the fllor as SFA finished the night 15-46 (.326). SLU shot .489 (23-47) for the game. The Lions were only five-of-17 at the free throw line while SFA went 8-11 (.727). The 'Jacks also outrebounded the Lions 33-31 for the night with Hank Rivers leading the way with eight rebounds.
After falling behind by as many as 14 points early in the second half, SFA did put together a little run and cut the SLU lead to only five points with 10:36 to play. SFA trimmed the lead further to only four, 41-37 on a three-pointer by Leonard Brown, but that started a 6-0 run by the Lions that all but buried the Lumberjacks.
SFA hosts UT-Arlington Thursday night at 8:15 p.m.
