
SFA Football Closes on Season at Northwestern State

'JACKS TO CLOSE 2005 IN NATCHITOCHES: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will try to close out the 2005 season on a winning note when it travels to Natchitoches, La., for the 62nd "Battle for Chief Caddo." The Lumberjacks also need one more victory to record a school-record seventh-straight winning season. SFA enters the game with a 5-5 (.500) overall record and a 1-4 (.200) Southland Conference mark. The Demons are 4-5 (.444) overall and tied for fourth in the league with a 2-3 (.400) SLC mark. The Demons enter today's game needing a victory to avoid their first losing season since 1999. The game against the Demons is slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m., from Turpin Stadium, and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
SFA vs. THE DEMONS: The Lumberjacks trail the all-time series to Northwestern State, 39-19-3 (.336), and have lost three of the last four meetings. The 'Jacks lone victory during that time was a 44-14 decision in Natchitoches in 2003. Since 1961, when the two teams began playing "The Battle for Chief Caddo," Northwestern State holds a 25-13-1 edge (.654). SFA is 4-2 (.667) in its last six meetings against Northwestern State in Natchitoches. The following is a look at the last 10 meetings between the two schools:
LAST TIME vs. THE DEMONS: The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 16-0 lead against the visiting Demons, but it wasn't enough as the Demons racked up 477 yards of total offense and scored 37 unanswered points in the second half to record a 37-16 victory. Senior quarterback Michael Williams finished his career with a 12-of-27 (44 percent) performance for 230 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed the ball 14 times for 39 yards. Williams' favorite target on the day was classmate Tony Tompkins who caught five passes for 157 yards and a score. Freshman Louie Runnels led the Lumberjacks ground attack with 10 carries for 40 yards.
