NACOGDOCHES - Nov. 12, 2005
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team lost to seventh-ranked Texas State, 38-21, Saturday afternoon in Homer Bryce Stadium. The loss drops SFA to 5-5 (.500) overall and 1-4 (.200) in Southland Conference play, while the Bobcats (8-2/4-1 SLC) keep their conference title hopes alive.
The games was close throughout until the Bobcats scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The `Jacks were within a touchdown, 28-21, with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter after sophomore Louie Runnels scored from four yards out. Runnels finished the game with a career-high 149 yards on 31 carries.
Unfortunately for the hometown fans, that would be as close as the Lumberjacks would get, as Texas State scored the final 10 points of the game, capped by an 81-yard touchdown scamper by Bobcat quarterback Barrick Nealy with only 1:56 on the clock.
Quarterback Zeke Dixon, who played in his final home game as a Lumberjack, finished the game 13-of-25 (52 percent) for 203 yards and two touchdowns, including a 58-yard scoring strike to classmate Carl Price in the first half. Dixon's accuracy, along with a defensive effort led by senior Ryan Luedecke's game-high 18 tackles, helped the Lumberjacks head into the intermission all knotted up at 14. But the Bobcats were too much in the end, outscoring SFA, 24-7, in the second half.
Price led all Lumberjack receivers with four catches for 91 yards and touchdown receptions of 58 and three yards. Junior Keldrick Holman had another solid performance for SFA, recording 12 tackles (eight solo stops), including one for a loss, and a pass breakup.
The Lumberjacks will close out the 2005 regular season Thursday when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State. The game against the Demons is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., and will be televised by ESPNU.
