NACOGDOCHES - Sophomore quarterback Danny Southall helped guide the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team to 395 yards of total offense, but it wasn't enough as Southeastern Louisiana spoiled the `Jacks' homecoming, 45-23, Saturday afternoon. The `Jacks fell to 4-4 (.500) on the season and 1-3 (.250) in Southland Conference play.
SFA took the opening kick off and moved the ball 41 yards to set up a 35-yard Cory Long field goal less than two minutes into the contest, but it would be the only points the `Jacks would see over the next 26 minutes of the game. Southeastern Louisiana came right back to rattle off 21 unanswered to take a commanding 21-3 lead.
The `Jacks got the ball with 8 minutes on the clock and Southall guided SFA on a 13-play, 56-yard drive that was capped by a seven-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Chance Dennis, to cut the lead to 21-10 just before half time. Dennis finished the game with five catches for 60 yards.
But it was more of the same from the Southeastern Louisiana offense in the second half as Lion quarterback Trey Willie guided the Lions to three second-half touchdowns and a field goal. Willie finished the game completing 17-of-25 passes for 308 yards and two scores. He also carried the ball 10 times for 57 yards.
Trailing 45-16 late in the fourth quarter, SFA mounted one final scoring drive. The `Jacks moved the ball 76 yards, capped by a four-yard TD scamper from Southall for the final tally. Southall finished the game completing 19-of-33 passes for 265 yards, with a rushing and passing touchdown in his first career start.
The Lumberjack defense was led by senior Darrell Bennett who recorded a career-high 13 tackles, including four solo stops. Senior Ryan Luedecke added 12 tackles and junior Kenneth Boley posted a career-high eight stops.
The `Jacks return to action Saturday Nov. 5, when they host UC Davis. The game against the Aggies is slated to begin at 4 p.m., from Homer Bryce Stadium.
