PLANO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack point guard Marcus Clark has been named first-team preseason All-Southland Conference, league officials announced Wednesday. Clark was the only Lumberjack player named to either the first- or second-team squads.
The senior point guard was named to the second-team All-SLC squad following last season, when he averaged 13 points per game. Clark shot 41 percent from the field last year and connected on 87 percent of his free throws, which was good enough for second in the conference. He also dished out 3.9 assists per game. Clark will begin the 2005-06 season with the chance to set a new school record for career assists. He currently has 317 and needs 67 more to take over the top spot.
As a team, the Lumberjacks were predicted to finish eighth in a poll of league head coaches and tied for seventh in a poll of SLC sports information directors, also released on Wednesday. SFA is coming off a 2004-05 campaign that saw the Lumberjacks go 12-15 overall and 6-10 in Southland play. Defending conference co-champion Northwestern State, which returns all five starters from last year, was chosen to finish first in both polls.
The Lumberjacks will open play on Nov. 19 when they travel to Tulsa, Okla. to take on the University of Tulsa. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip.
