NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- With 90 players in camp, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team went through the first of five straight nights of conditioning type workouts on the turf at Homer Bryce Stadium Monday night. The team will work out nightly at 7:30 p.m. in the stadium through Friday. Friday night's workout will be the first in full pads for the `Jacks in preparation for the season opener, Sept. 2 against Henderson State. SFA enters fall camp seeking to complete the process started last spring of finding replacements in the secondary for former SFA safeties, Brent Hafford and David Crocker. SFA defensive coordinator Kim Dameron must also find replacements for cornerbacks Jamaal Cato and Nick Houston. Braylon Lester enters camp as the most experienced veteran with nine starts a year ago at Rover. Ryan Luedecke and Roderick Palmer also picked up a handful of starts a year ago and will battle for starting roles this fall. Offensively, SFA hopes that transfer running back Derek Farmer will help bolster an SFA rushing attack that averaged just under 167 yards per game on the ground a year ago. The `Jacks are led offensively by returning first team All-Southland Conference quarterback Michael Williams and receiver Tony Tompkins. Both Williams and Tompkins enter 2004 as first team preseason All-SLC picks. SFA will practice nightly at 7:30 p.m. with all practices free and open to the public. NOTES -- • The Lumberjacks will wrap up the first week of fall camp with Media Day Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the stadium. • Saturday will be the first day of two-a-day practices for SFA with a Saturday morning workout set for 8:35 a.m. and an evening practice at 7:30 p.m. in the stadium
