
SFA Track & Field Heads to NCAA Regionals

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team returns to action Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regionals fresh off their Southland Conference runner-up finish. The meet will get started at noon both days beginning with the field events. The track events will get started at 4 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Frank G. Anderson Track and Field Complex. The Midwest Region consists of schools from Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Wyoming and Montana. The top five competitors from each event will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship June 9-12 in Austin.
Ladyjacks in Action The Ladyjacks will be sending seven athletes competing in nine different events. Senior Blake Gordon (discus and shot put) will be making her second consecutive trip to the regional meet. Gordon will be joined by juniors Ana Rodriguez (5,000 meters) and Jocelyn Stevens (400-meter hurdles and high jump), who will also be making their second-straight trip to the meet. Seniors Vicky Jannise (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Jennifer Schreiner (pole vault) will be making their first appearance at the regionals. Also make their first appearance at the regional meet will junior Teresa Murray in the high jump and sophomore Stevina Wyatt (100-meter hurdles).
Lumberjacks in Action The Lumberjacks will be sending eight athletes to the regional championship meet. Senior DeVaughn Rettig qualified for the meet in the long jump and triple jump but will only be competing in the triple jump. Classmate Alex Beckworth will be joined by freshman Reggie Lazenby in the 110-meter hurdles. Senior Justin Meier will be competing in the 1,500 meters, while classmate Mike Thompson will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Senior Paul Todd will be competing in the high jump. The Lumberjacks are sending two freshmen throwers to the regional meet who had huge impacts in their rookie seasons. Darwin Johnson will compete in the discus while Wade Whittington will be competing in the javelin.
Up Next ... If any of SFA's athletes finish among the top five in their events they will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship meet. The NCAA Championships will be held Wednesday June 9th through Saturday June 12th in Austin, Texas.
