SFA Closes Out Week Three With 60-Play Scrimmage

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team closed out the third week of spring practices with a 60-play scrimmage Thursday afternoon in Homer Bryce Stadium. The defensive unit held the offense in check throughout much of the hour long workout.
The defensive units held the offense to 238 yards of total offense in the scrimmage, but was touched up for two big plays. Tony Tompkins scored on a 58-yard run midway through the scrimmage working with the first units. Tompkins ended the day with three carries for 62 yards and the one score. The other big play came when Danny Southall connected with walk-on A.J. Van Allsdale for a 63-yard scoring strike against the third unit.
Southall combined with Michael Williams and Zeke Dixon to complete 13 of 28 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions. Two of the scoring plays came early in the scrimmage when the offensive unit was working on goal line situations. Both Williams and Dixon threw scoring passes during the goal line work.
Tompkins led the team in rushing with 62 yards on three carries and the one touchdown. Tailbacks Derek Farmer and Ron Middleton and fullback Eric Chapman were held out of the scrimmage with injuries.
The defense picked up two sacks in the scrimmage with Martin Thompson and Ryan Luedecke each picking up a sack. The defensive units also forced three fumbles and picked off two passes on the afternoon. Luedecke also had one of the interceptions.
SFA returns to the practice field to close out spring practice next week with workouts scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The spring game will wrap up the 15 spring workouts next Friday night, April 16 at 7:00 p.m.
