Offense Prevails In Purple-White Game

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- One week after the defense controlled a spring scrimmage, the Stephen F. Austin offensive units put up some good numbers in the annual Purple and White game to close out spring practice for 2004. Three Lumberjack quarterbacks combined to complete 22 of 38 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense to a 23-21 win over the defense before a good crowd in Homer Bryce Stadium.
"I was pleased with the scrimmage. I thought we had a good scrimmage and got the ball into the hands of some explosive players offensively. I thought all three quarterbacks did a great job tonight, especially Danny Southall," said head coach Mike Santiago. "Defensively, we saw some tough licks out there and we got good pressure on the quarterbacks. I was a little disappointed in that we only forced one turnover, but overall I thought it was a good way to wrap up what has been a good spring."
Southall led the quarterbacks with 152 yards passing, completing nine of 13 passes and throwing touchdown passes to walk-on Daniel Foster and redshirt freshman Cedric Reescano. Foster caught the first score of the night on a diving 14-yard catch in the first quarter and Reescano made another good catch on a well thrown seven yard score in the second quarter.
Michael Williams went six of 11 for 93 yards and Zeke Dixon also completed seven of 13 passes for 99 yards.
Reescano had a big night receiving with three catches for 93 yards, including a 56-yarder from Southall. Cletus McGee also had three catches for 56 yards.
The SFA defense limited the running game to only 112 yards on 51 carries. Derek Farmer ended the night with nine carries for 36 yards and Ron Middleton added 12 carries for 34 yards. Gary Allen also picked up 20 yards on five carries for the night.
Braylon Lester, TeRai Lawson and Erick Wilson were credited with six tackles each to lead the defense with Bug Aymond, Martin Thompson, Ryan Smith and Ryan Luedecke picking up five tackles each. The defensive unit also picked up four sacks with Scott Morgan, James Shead, Erick Wilson and Kenneth Winters each getting a sack. Lawson also had a fumble recovery for the only turnover of the scrimmage.
The 'Jacks open the season Sept. 4, at home, against Henderson State.
