SFA Opens Outdoor season at York Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team kicked off the 2004 outdoor season Friday at the York Invitational in Huntsville, Texas. The Ladyjacks won four events and set four NCAA Regional marks while the Lumberjacks won three events.
Junior Jocelyn Stevens led the Ladyjacks bringing home the individual title in the 100-meter hurdles (14.60) and the high jump with her regional qualifying mark of 5-8.00. Classmate Teresa Murray also qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships with her mark of 5-8.00 in the high jump. Stevens outpaced freshman Leah Matthews in the 100-meter hurdles who recorded time of 14.95 to finish second. Senior Jennifer Schreiner finished in a two-way tie for first in the pole vault when she cleared a height of 12-3.50. Schreiner's mark was good enough to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships. Senior Blake Gordon also qualified for the regional championships, winning the discus with her toss of 159-05. Freshman LaQuisha Houston finished third in the discus with her throw of 128-01. Sophomore Sarah Emerson recorded a third-place finish in the javelin throw with her mark of 122-10. The Ladyjacks' 4X400-meter relay team was the top finishing collegiate team with their time of 3:51.35.
Senior DeVaughn Rettig led the Lumberjacks attack as he won the long jump with his mark of 22-5.75. Rettig was also second in the triple jump (46-4.25). Senior Paul Todd has picked up in the outdoor season where he left off in the indoor season winning the high jump. Todd cleared a height of 6-8.75 for the victory. Sophomore Michael Ludlow won the pole vault clearing a height of 15-5.00. Freshman Reggie Lazenby recorded a time of 14.77 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish second just ahead of teammate Jonathan James (14.84). Sophomore Kenneth McKinley recorded a second-place finish in the shot put with his toss of 49-7.25. Freshman Darwin Johnson was fourth in the event with his mark of 48-10.00. Johnson also recorded a third-place finish in the discus with his throw of 153-03.00. Freshman Wade Whittington looked strong in the javelin throw recording a throw of 173-3.00 in his first meet of the season.
SFA returns to action March 18th and 19th at the Texas A&M Multis and Relays.
