NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team opened the 2004-05 season Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum in an exhibition game against Everyone's Internet, a team comprised of former collegiate standouts. Everyone's Internet defeated SFA, 80-41.
The Ladyjacks hung tough early in the contest despite a distinct height advantage for the visiting exhibition team. But turnovers hurt SFA late in the first half as Everyone's Internet went on an 18-2 run to go into the intermission with a 53-19 advantage. Junior Britany Vinson provided the spark for SFA scoring eight of her team-high 10 points in the first half on 3-of-6 (.500) shooting. She was 2-for-5 (.400) from beyond the three-point arc.
Everyone's Internet held the advantage in the second half opening with a 12-2 run to take a 65-21 lead with 14:51 remaining in the contest. The visiting team finished the night with five players in double-figures, led by Jocelynn Penn's 15 points. In the end, Everyone's Internet had to much offensive power going 31-for-58 (.534) from the floor, while holding SFA to a 16-of-59 (.271) shooting performance.
Sophomore Jennifer Simpson was solid for SFA coming off the bench to score eight points and grab two rebounds. Junior LaToya Mills added seven points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for SFA. Senior Zedralyn Butler added seven points and three rebounds for the Ladyjacks.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday night when they host Athletes in Action in their final exhibition game. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
