NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (6-4,1-3) snapped a three game losing streak in a big way Saturday with a 55-7 pasting of McNeese State in a regionally televised game on FOX Sports Net.
The 'Jacks rushed for a season high 223 yards on 51 carries and took advantage of seven McNeese State turnovers to pick up win number six on the year. The win marks the sixth straight season the Lumberjacks have been above the .500 mark, the longest such streak in SFA history.
Ron Middleton led the SFA ground attack with 114 yards and three rushing touchdowns on only 15 carries. He scored on runs of 16, 52 and three yards. His first touchdown capped a five play 32-yard drive following the first of three McNeese State fumbles. The score put SFA ahead 10-0 with 5:25 to play in the first quarter. The 'Jacks scored another touchdown early in the second quarter following the first of two blocked punts on the afternoon. Louie Runnels capped a 29-yard drive with a six yard run to make it 17-0.
McNeese State's only score of the game came on a 65-yard fumble recovery and return by John Vigors and made the score 24-7 with 2:33 left in the first half. The 'Jacks added another touchdown just before the half when Zeke Dixon hooked up with Tony Tompkins from 19 yards out to make it 31-7 at the break. SFA added 24 more points in the second half of play for the final 55-7 margin.
The Lumberjack defense forced the Cowboys into four interceptions and picked up three fumbles on the night. McNeese State had only 225 yards of total offense on the night. Jack Criss and Braylon Lester led SFA with 11 tackles each and Bug Aymong picked up two interceptions, his first as a collegiate player.
