Ladyjacks Picked Fourth in Preseason Poll

PLANO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team has been picked fourth in a preseason poll of the Southland Conference head coaches and sixth in a preseason poll of the league sports information directors announced league officials Wednesday afternoon.
The Ladyjacks received 72 points from the conference head coaches to place fourth behind preseason favorite Texas-Arlington. The Ladyjacks received 71 points from the league sports information directors to finish sixth behind Northwestern State who received top billing. The Ladyjacks are coming off a 2003-04 campaign that saw them go 9-19 (.321) and finish tied for fifth in the SLC.
Juniors LaToya Mills and Kendria Smith were named to the 2004-05 Preseason All-SLC second team. Mills was an All-SLC second-team selection last year after leading the team and finishing 11th in the conference in points and third in the league rebounds. She capped off the 2003-04 regular season with a career-high 30-point outburst at Texas State.
Smith really came in to her own during her second season in Nacogdoches. She finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding. Smith also asserted herself as one of the more dominant figures in the low post defensively, finishing second in the league in blocks. She capped off her sophomore season earning third-team All-SLC honors.
The Ladyjacks open the 2004-05 season Thursday Nov. 4th in an exhibition game. The game will begin at 7 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
