NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin State University athletics director Steve McCarty has been named chair of the I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Stars Committee. McCarty will chair the panel comprised of six athletics directors from institutions across the country that play I-AA football.
The committee will review nominees for the Academic All-Star team from across the country and select a team which will be announced at the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship Game, in Chattanooga, Tenn, Dec. 17.
Once the team is selected, the committee will then choose 10 members of the team as finalists for a pair of $5,000 post-graduate scholarships. From those 10 finalists the two winners will be selected for the awards. Each of the 119 institutions that play I-AA football is allowed to nominate two student-athletes that meet the minimum criteria for the award.
Former Lumberjack offensive lineman David Phillips was a member of the Academic All-Star team following the 2002 season. TM
