`Jacks Rally to Beat UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Tony Tompkins was responsible for 250 yards of total offense, one touchdown and a two-point conversion as the 10th-ranked Lumberjack football team rallied for a 22-19 victory over UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Toomey Field. The `Jacks are now 5-1 (.833) as the get set to open Southland Conference play.
UC Davis seemed to be in control of the game leading, 19-14, in the fourth quarter. Then the Lumberjacks put together a 10-play, 79-yard drive that culminated in a four-yard touchdown pass from Michael Williams to Matt Bodley on fourth down. Williams then hit Tompkins with a pass for the two-point conversion to give SFA a three-point advantage with only six minutes on the clock.
It was then up to the defense to shutdown UC Davis and that is exactly what the `Jacks did, forcing the Aggies to punt the ball away. The offense came back on the field and melted the clock away behind another strong performance from senior Derek Farmer. Farmer finished the game with 24 carries for 96 yards. He also caught a pass of 39 yards from Tompkins to start the scoring.
The Lumberjacks surrendered 300 yards of offense in the first half, but went into the intermission and made some adjustments. The Lumberjacks came out in the second half and shutdown the Aggies holding them to only 98 yards and only 34 yards through the air.
Senior Michael Williams was 13-of-25 for 217 yards and two touchdowns but 114 of those yards came in the second half. Williams was 10-of-13 down the stretch as he guided SFA to its third victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
One of Williams' two touchdown passes was a 72-yard strike to senior Miguel Toulon in the first half. Toulon finished the game with two catches for 77 yards.
The `Jacks will be back in action Saturday Oct. 23rd, when they travel to San Marcos, Texas, to open Southland Conference play against Texas State. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
