NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team lost to Tulsa, 3-0 (39-37, 30-24, 30-21), Saturday night in the championship match of the SFA Invitational. The Ladyjacks are now 3-4 (.429) on the season.
The first game was a back-n-forth affair that saw both teams battle for an advantage. Senior Julie Goodson (Alvin, Texas) was strong for SFA, leading the way with nine kills (.364 attack percentage). But the Golden Hurricane was too strong, winning the game, 39-37.
The game one loss seemed to give Tulsa all the momentum as they won game two 30-24. Tulsa was led by Lindsay Eaves' 13 kills (.684 attack percentage).
The Golden Hurricane grabbed a huge lead in game three but SFA battled back behind junior Deborah Kirkham's (Houston, Texas) nine kills and 12 digs. Junior Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) added seven kills and four blocks. Freshman Stephanie Figgers (Katy, Texas) was solid in a ball-control capacity recording a team-high 13 digs.
Texas-Pan American finished third at the SFA Invitational with their 3-1 (30-23, 30-26, 28-30, 30-28) win over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Lady Broncs were led by Cathi Netemeyer's 22 kills.
Burton was the lone Ladyjack on the all-tournament team. The tournament MVP was Tulsa's Kristen Bailey. The rest of the all-tournament team consisted of the Golden Hurricane's Lindsey Eaves and Gabriella Penaluna. Beth Henson was the Ragin' Cajuns representative. UTPAs Carol Marcengo was also selected to the all-tournament team.
"The thing we are looking for at this time in the season is to make sure we are improving from week to week," said Humphreys. "After the match, I ask the team where they felt we stood compared to this time last week and we have taken giant steps forward. I don't know that volleyball gets any better than game one tonight. Both teams played great. If we can keep that intensity we had in game one throughout the whole season, we will win a lot of games."
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday to face Louisiana Tech. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
