NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team closed out fall camp Saturday night in a one and a half hour scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium. The first and second units on both offense and defense worked against the scout teams in preparations for Saturday's season opener at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
SFA quarterback Zeke Dixon, a preseason All-Southland Conference selection was sharp as he guided the first team offense to an early score hooking up with Tony Tompkins for a 67-yard scoring strike on the team's first possession. Dixon ended the night completing nine of 13 passes for 197 yards. He also later added a 50-yard scoring strike to Michael David. He was intercepted once.
Tompkins had only the one reception but also added 28 yards rushing on four carries. Michael David, a junior wide receiver from Georgetown, led the team with three catches for 72 yards including the 50-yard touchdown from Dixon.
Ron Middleton, a redshirt freshman running back from Cedar Hill was impressive as he chalked up 38 yards rushing on nine carries including a five yard scoring run in a simulated overtime period late in the scrimmage. Middleton is expected to see increased playing time with the loss of Gary Allen.
The first team defensive unit was also impressive as they limited the scout offense to only 88 total yards on 51 plays. There was nothing on the ground as the 'Jacks held the scouts to -17 yards rushing on 21 attempts. That included yardage lost on seven sacks on the evening. Kenneth Winters was credited with three sacks, while Ryan Smith also added a pair for the first team defense.
Freshman quarterback Danny Southall did throw a 25-yard touchdown pass to freshman Garrett Inman in the simulated overtime. Inman made a great catch on a well thrown ball to the back corner of the end zone.
SFA will hit the practice fields again Tuesday afternoon, the first day of classes at the university.
