SFA Softball Drops Two To Southwest Texas

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The SFA softball team fell to 12-13, 4-4 Saturday after dropping both ends of a Southland Conference doubleheader to Southwest Texas (17-5, 5-0), in San Marcos. SFA lost the first game 8-0 after picking up only one hit, and fell in the nightcap of the twinbill, 2-1. Game three of the Southland Conference series is set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
Brooke Chandler picked up the only hit of the afternoon for the 'Jacks in game one as Nicole Neuerberg continued her dominating season on the mound for Southwest Texas in picking up her tenth win against only four losses. Neuerberg struck out six batters along the way.
Southwest Texas scored eight runs on ten hits off SFA pitching in handing Devin Cobb (4-1) her first loss of the season. Cobb started and pitched 4.1 innings giving up seven earned runs on nine hits. Nicole Carter came on in relief and pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing one run on one hit.
The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits, and held the 2-0 all the way to the bottom of the fifth inning before breaking the game open. Southwest Texas collected five hits in the inning and was aided by two walks and a hit batter in the frame.
Game two proved to be a tight one as the 'Jacks fell 2-1. Southwest Texas scored both its runs in the bottom of the second on back-to-back homers by Rachel Bonetti and Katie Trahan off starter Crissy Autry (5-8). Autry went the distance for SFA, giving up only the two runs on three hits. She struck out 11.
Carrie Woydziak went 2-3 in game two, picking up two of SFA's four hits in the game. She led the game off with an infield single, but was left stranded at third after a sacrifice, a ground out and a fly out to end the inning.
The lone SFA run came in the top of the third inning when Autry led off the inning with a solo shot to left center to cut the margin to 2-1. Woydziak singled with one out, but was stranded when Chandler grounded out the end the inning.
Lee Lara doubled with one out in the fourth inning but was later thrown out trying to steal third base. That was the last threat SFA could put together against Southwest Texas pitching as Katie Trahan worked all seven innings for the Bobcats, allowing the one run on four hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
The series concludes Sunday with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m.
