
SFA Track & Field Has Strong Showing at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field teams continued the 2003 outdoor season at the Ty Terrell Relays Saturday. The Ladyjacks recorded six individual titles at the meet.
Sophomore Melody Tillman won the 400-meter dash with her time of 59.61. Classmate Jocelyn Stevens led a sweep of the 400-meter hurdles finishing first with a time of 1:01.30. Stevens finished just ahead of teammates Katie Lonergan (1:04.50) and Bonnie McHan (1:04.81). Freshman Kasie Query won the pole vault clearing a height of 12-0.00. Teammate Jennifer Schneider finished second in the pole vault with her mark of 11-00.00. Senior Jessica Claiborne won the long jump with her mark of 5.85 meters. While senior Destine Rawls won shot put with her toss of 47-3.00. Junior Blake Gordon finished third in the event with her mark of 41-10.00. Rawls also won the individual title in the discus with her throw of 147-07. Gordon finished second in the discus with a mark of 134-07. Freshman Sarah Emerson won the individual title in the javelin throw (41.67 meters) finishing just ahead of Query who was second with her throw of 41.40. The Ladyjacks 4X440-yard relay team finished first with their time of 3:54.62.
On the men's side, sophomore Jonathan James finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 14.44. Junior DeVaughn Rettig finished fourth in the long jump (6.74 meters) and fifth in the triple jump (14.12 meters). Freshman Kenneth McKinley had a strong showing in the throws finishing second in the shot put (47-0.00) and javelin (57.25 meters). McKinley also added a forth-place finish in the discus with his throw of 137-00.
The SFA distance squad traveled to Houston, Texas, Friday for the Rice University Bayou Classic. Junior Vicky Jannise had a solid outing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase finishing second with a time of 11:54.60. On the men's side, sophomore Clifton Tierney finished fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:00.37. Senior Josh Hufstedler finished second in the 5,000 meters (15:35.30). Freshman Daniel Williams finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:50.70. Sophomore Haile Teklai finished fifth in the steeplechase with his time of 10:19.40.
The SFA track and field teams return to action Tuesday at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
