SFA SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR TO SAM HOUSTON
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb. 23, 2003
CONTACT: Rob Meyers HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team fell to 1-2 in Southland Conference play Sunday by dropping a pair of games to Sam Houston by scores of 2-1 and 4-2. With the losses, SFA falls to 9-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
SFA took the first game of the three game series by a 4-2 score Saturday afternoon. Brooke Chandler scored a pair of runs, including a solo home run, and also stole two bases. Freshman leftfielder Carrie Woydziak also continued her hot streak at the plate with two hits in four trips, including a double and run scored. Crissy Autry picked up the win in the opener pitching 6.2 innings and allowing only two runs on four hits. She struck out four Sam Houston batters.
The second game was suspended after 10 innings due to darkness Saturday with the scored tied at 1-1. The game was resumed Sunday afternoon with Sam Houston picking up the win with a run in the bottom of the 12th inning, to win, 2-1. Autry was tagged with the loss to drop to 5-5 on the year. It marked the eighth time this year SFA has been involved in a one run game, with the 'Jacks falling to 3-5 on the year in one run decisions.
Autry was called on once again in game three of the series and was staked to an early 2-0 lead after the 'Jacks pushed across runs in the top of the second and third innings. Sam Houston stormed back in the bottom of the fourth as they roughed up Autry for four runs, three of which were earned in the inning. Autry (5-6) was lifted with two outs in the fourth after allowing the four runs on only three hits. Devin Cobb came on in relief and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, not allowing a hit.
SFA had opportunities in the game but could not come up with the big hit needed as the 'Jacks left six runners on base in collecting eight hits against a pair of Sam Houston pitchers. Woydziak was 3-4 in game three, with Jaime Brown also adding two hits in four trips. Brown also scored a run. Crista Hargrove, Tara Hersey and Crissy Autry all picked up one hit each for SFA.
The 'Jacks return to the field this weekend in their home opener as they play host to UL-Monroe Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in a Southland Conference doubleheader. The series will wrap up with a single game Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
