Phillips, Hoelscher Named To District VI Academic Team

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Two members of the Stephen F. Austin State University football team have been named to the 2003 CoSIDA Academic District VI football team. The team is selected by a vote of sports information directors at institutions in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
David Phillips, a 6-5, 305-pound senior tackle from Kemp, and Matt Hoelscher, a 6-4, 282-pound center from College Station both earned second team honors.
Phillips was a member of the 2002 All-Academic Southland Conference team, and was also voted to the NACDA Academic All-Star team following last season. A three year starter at left tackle for the Lumberjacks, he was also a second team All-Southland Conference selection following the 2002 season and was a first team preseason all-conference team member in 2003.
He is a dual major at the university, majoring in both chemistry and criminal justice and has a 3.202 career grade point average.
Hoelscher is a first year starter at center for the Lumberjacks. He has started all nine games so far in 2003 after playing in a reserve role behind All-American Greg Barnum a year ago. Hoelscher is also majoring in criminal justice, and has a 3.69 grade point average. He has also competed for the Lumberjack track team throwing both the shot and discus.
Only six of the 48 student-athletes selected to the all-district team came from I-AA programs and SFA was one of two I-AA programs in the district to place two student-athletes on the team. McNeese State, Northwestern State and Grambling State were the only other I-AA programs with student-athletes voted to the team.
