NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Turnovers and penalties combined to cost the Lumberjacks a chance to beat the Portland State Vikings Saturday, as SFA fell 21-13, at Homer Bryce Stadium. SFA turned the ball over five times on the night and also missed three field goals in the first half of play as Portland State turned two of the 'Jacks turnovers into touchdowns. SFA had one touchdown called back early in the fourth quarter on a penalty.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter, and it was not until the Vikings' Joe Wiser connected with Ryan Brown from 62-yards out with 8:10 remaining in the second quarter until someone broke the ice. The long touchdown play followed a fumble by Adam Whitehead on a completed pass that Ryan Luedecke could not recover.
SFA took the opening kick of the third quarter and moved the ball to the Portland State 25-yard line before receiver Chance Dennis had the ball knocked loose. PSU recovered and scored on a five play 75-yard drive to extend its lead to 14-0.
On the next possession, Zeke Dixon threw an interception at the 'Jacks 35-yard line to linebacker Joey King. King returned it to the 30-yard line and on the first play from scrimmage, Ryan Fuqua went 30-yards to make it 21-0.
The 'Jacks finally got on the board with 4:21 remaining in the game when Tony Tompkins connected with tight end Corey Goodall for a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7. SFA added another score with one second play , but Ryan Rossner missed the extra point and the final was 21-13.
SFA had 367 yards of offense to Portland State's 386, but could not overcome the missed field goals and turnovers in falling to the Vikings for the third straight time.
