SFA Beats Texas State 44-27 To Cap Off Homecoming

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (5-3,2-0) beat the Bobcats of Texas State (3-6,0-2) 44-27 Saturday night before 10,183 on a homecoming evening at Homer Bryce Stadium. The 'Jacks trailed 19-13 at the half before outscoring Texas State, 31-8 in the second half of play.
The Lumberjacks' defensive unit held Texas State to only 152 yards of offense in the second half of play and controlled the ball offensively holding the ball for 34:51 of the game. The 'Jacks rushed for 250 yards on 53 carries, with Tony Tompkins leading the way. Tompkins had nine carries for 72 yards in the game. Michael Williams also added 70 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries on the afternoon.
Williams also completed 14 of 23 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown, he was intercepted once. Williams hooked up with Chance Dennis midway through the fourth quarter on a 37-yard scoring play to put SFA up 37-27. Texas State had just cut the SFA lead to 30-27 on a 13-play, 89 yard drive. That drive accounted for over half of the Bobcats' offensive output in the second half of play.
DL Kenneth Winters scored after picking off a Barrick Nealy pass at the seven yard line to give the 'Jacks a 30-19 lead with 4:36 left in the third quarter. It was a lead the 'Jacks would never relinquish. The SFA defense picked up two sacks and eight tackles for losses on the afternoon in giving up 407 yards to the Bobcats. The 'Jacks outgained TXST 471-407 for the game.
Chance Dennis had three catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon, and Ryan Rossner also was 3-4 on field goal attempts connecting from 32,43, and 42 yards while missing wide left on a 41-yarder.
