NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach Danny Kaspar has released a schedule for the coming year for the Lumberjacks which features 11 non-conference games and a 16-game Southland Conference schedule.
Among the 11 non-conference games are seven home dates for the 'Jacks beginning with the season opener, Nov. 22, when SFA hosts Houston Baptist University. The 'Jacks will then go on the road for two straight opening the road portion of the schedule Nov. 25, at Baylor. The Bears are the only Big 12 team on the schedule in 2003-04. SFA follows the meeting with the Bears with the first of two scheduled games with Alcorn State of the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Nov. 29. The Braves return the visit the following week with a trip to the William R. Johnson Coliseum, Dec. 6.
SFA follows the home-and-home series with Alcorn State with a visit to Conference USA member, TCU on Dec. 8, then a trip to Shreveport, La. to take on Centenary. SFA opens its longest homestand of the season, five straight, Dec. 13 when Grambling State visits the coliseum, followed by a match-up with Panhandle State Dec. 20, and a return game with Centenary, Dec. 22, to close out things before Christmas.
The Lumberjacks continue the homestand following a short break for the holidays when Cameron University visits Dec. 30, followed by the final non-conference game of the season against Lyon College, Jan. 3.
The Southland Conference has adopted a 16-game conference schedule for the 2003-04 season with the top eight teams qualifying for the SLC postseason tournament. Last season, teams played a 20-game regular season slate with the top six teams making the field for the postseason tourney.
SFA opens SLC play on the road against Northwestern State, Jan. 8, then returns home for two straight against McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana, before travelling to Monroe, La. to take on the Indians of UL-Monroe. The month of January will also see SFA hosting UT-Arlington and Sam Houston before closing out the month against SLU, in Hammond, La.
The Lumberjacks will face four conference teams only once this year with Nicholls State and UT-San Antonio both coming to Nacogodoches and the 'Jacks paying visits to Lamar and Texas State for the only meetings between the two teams for 2003-04.
The season opens Friday night with Midnight Mardi Gras in the Coliseum. The event is free and open to the public.
