NACOGDOCHES - Freshman Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) scored a team-high 17 points to lead Ladyjacks to a 77-69 victory over rival Sam Houston State Saturday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improved to 7-7 (.500) overall with the victory and stay atop the Southland Conference with a 7-0 record.
The first half was a back-n-forth affair that saw neither team gain more than a five point advantage. There were eight lead changes and six ties in the first half before the Ladyjacks carried a one-point advantage into the halftime, 37-36. Despite her eight first-half points, Killingsworth got into early foul trouble, picking up her third foul at the 13:44 mark. With Killingsworth on the bench for the final 14 minutes of the half, the Ladyjacks turned to senior Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas) who led the team with 11 points at halftime. Wright finished the game with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting (.667). She was a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the three-point line.
The Ladyjacks came out in the second half and built a nine-point advantage, led by senior Yolanda Grant's (Flatonia, Texas) 10 second-half points and seven rebounds. Sam Houston State made one final run, cutting the Ladyjack lead to one-point with 6:47 remaining in the contest. But SFA didn't allow the Bearkats to get any closer, winning their seventh game in a row.
The Ladyjacks dominated Sam Houston State on the glass, 45-30. Freshman LaToya Mills (Houston, Texas) pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. She also poured in nine points. Senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday against Texas-San Antonio. The game is slated to tipoff at 6 p.m., from the Convocation Center.
