MARTIN, Tenn. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team ended a three-game losing streak and picked up their first win of the season Friday night against Tennessee-Martin, beating the Skyhawks, 2-1.
Sophomore Lauren Matkin (Wimberley, Texas) put SFA up 1-0 when she scored her first career goal, and the team's first of the season, at 26:25 mark of the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki (Calgary, Alberta) held UT-Martin at bay, recording 12 saves in the victory. Sophomore Sarah Johnson (Ft. Worth, Texas) put the game away with her goal in the 63rd minute of the game. Junior Allison Lawrence (Kingwood, Texas) was credited with the assist.
UT-Martin tried to mount a comeback when the Skyhawk's Dani Myrick netted a goal at the 88:46 mark, But it was too little, too late as the Ladyjacks held on for the victory.
"I was very happy with the win," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "We still are not playing 90 minutes of good soccer, so we still have things to work on. It is a good win for us. The two goals were beautiful goals, put together well. We are looking forward to more people stepping and scoring for us."
The Ladyjacks return to the field Sunday to take on Murray State. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
