Newcomers Report For Start Of Fall Camp

Twenty-eight freshmen and transfer student-athletes reported Tuesday, for the first day of 2002 fall camp. Included among the group of 28 are 23 freshmen and five transfer students. The group will spend two days working with members of the football coaching staff prior to the arrival of the veterans Friday.
"This is always a great time of year. We've got a great group of freshmen and transfer student-athletes coming in, and I'm looking forward to getting fall camp started and begin preparing for Portland State on August 31," said Mike Santiago.
Among the transfers are four from Division I-A institutions. Marcus Cormier, a defensive back from the University of North Carolina has joined the 'Jacks for his final season of collegiate football after graduating from the North Carolina. The former Lufkin Panther standout will play this season while taking graduate classes at SFA.
SFA also added a defensive back from Kansas University with the addition of Carl Ivey. Ivey has spent the past years at Kansas after a high school career at Killeen Ellison where he played for current Lumberjack assistant coach Robert Walker.
The third Division I-A transfer comes to the ?Jacks from Colorado State University. Alonzo Floyd, a running back from Crowley High School will have three years of eligibility remaining with the 'Jacks.
Roderick Palmer, a defensive back from New Mexico also will attend SFA this fall after spending the 2001 season with the Lobos. The Cedar Hill High School product has four years of eligibility remaining. Palmer is a former high school teammate of freshman Ron Middleton.
Also included among those reporting today was Nick Houston, a transfer defensive back from Tyler Junior College that signed with SFA last spring.
The 28 newcomers will work out twice Wednesday before taking a day off for meetings and orientation Thursday. Veterans report Friday morning at the field house and will take the turf at Homer Bryce Stadium for pictures and media day starting at 6:00 p.m. The evening session is open the public and will give SFA fans a great opportunity to meet with members of the team and take pictures of their favorite Lumberjack player.
