
Ladyjacks Drop Doubleheader at Wichita

WICHITA, Kansas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team lost both of its matches on the final day of the Green Mills Restaurant Classic in Wichita, Kansas Saturday. SFA lost to Georgia, 3-2, in the morning session. The Ladyjacks returned to the court against Miami (Fla.) Saturday afternoon but fell, 3-1.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Georgia behind the strong play of senior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas). Wood led the Ladyjacks with 26 kills. But the Lady Bulldogs fought back in game three to win a close one, 33-31. SFA was unable to recover losing the final two games for its second consecutive loss of the season.
Senior Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) recorded another double-double with her 58 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Deborah Kirkham (Houston, Texas) led all players with her 18 digs.
SFA faced Miami (Fla.) in the afternoon session, but the Hurricanes were too strong. The Hurricanes had four players that recorded double-figure kills, led by Marcela Gamarra's 21, as Miami took an early 2-0 lead over SFA. The Ladyjacks fought back to take game three, 30-25, behind Wood's 14 kills but Miami hung on to win game four and the match.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Ladyjacks open against Northeastern in a 3 (2 p.m. Texas time) p.m. match. SFA will return to the court for a 7 (6 p.m. Texas time) p.m., match against tournament-host UCF.
