The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team kicked off the 2002 season Friday at the Green Mills Restaurant Classic in Wichita, Kansas. SFA opened the tournament against New Mexico beating the Lobos, 3-1 (25-30, 30-25, 30-17, 30-28). But the Ladyjacks fell to tournament-host Wichita State, 3-1 (31-29, 23-30, 30-18, 30-27), in the evening session.
Preseason All-Southland Conference selection Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) led the Ladyjacks in the first match with her 17 kills. Wood was one of four Ladyjacks to record double-figure kills. Senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) recorded 12 kills, while sophomores Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) and Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) each carded 10.
Senior setter Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) recorded a double-double as she led the team with 44 assists and 12 digs. Williams was one of four players to record at least eight digs against the Lobos.
In the evening session, the Ladyjacks led most of game one, before surrendering their first lead at game point. The Shockers went on to win game one, 31-29. SFA fought back to take game two, 30-23, and tie the match at 1. But the Ladyjacks were held at bay the rest of the match. The loss drops the Ladyjacks to 1-1 on the season.
"Not a bad first day," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "I thought we gave some things away tonight, especially in game one. I thought we fought back real well to take game two. We did some good things today but struggled at times. There is some really good competition here and that is making for some good matches. We are capable of beating these teams. We have an early morning tomorrow so we have to put this behind us and get ready for Georgia and Miami (Fla.)."
The Ladyjacks look to get back on the winning track Saturday as they take on Georgia at 9:30 a.m. SFA returns to the court Saturday afternoon to close out the Green Mills Restaurant Classic against Miami (Fla.). The match against the Hurricanes is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Heskett Center.
