NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team got the 2002 season underway Thursday night with the annual Purple and White scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium. The white team recorded the shutout, beating the purple squad, 2-0.
Freshman Sara Hernandez (Tyler, Texas) recorded the games first goal late in the first half on a pass from sophomore Kendra Cannon (Kilgore, Texas). The white squad held the one-goal advantage into the second half when Cannon recorded an unassisted goal to put the white team up, 2-0.
Freshman Natascia Michalezki (Calgary, Alberta) was solid in net for the purple team. She entered the game in the second half and recorded four saves.
"Overall, I felt that we looked pretty good tonight," said first-year head coach Nicole Nelson. "The girls have come into camp and worked hard and it shows. I'm pleased with the team's effort and what they have accomplished thus far given the bumps and bruises."
The Ladyjacks kick off the 2002 regular season Saturday Aug. 31, at home against Louisiana State. The match is schedule to begin at 7 p.m., from Homer Bryce Stadium. Admission is free to students.
