NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head football coach Mike Santiago said after Thursday night's scrimmage that he was pleased with the way his team went through a 60-plus play controlled scrimmage. The coaching staff used only the second practice in full pads as a tool to evaluate a number of new players in full speed situations. Members of the first unit were limited to just a handful of snaps in the scrimmage.
"I saw a great deal of effort on both sides of the ball. I was very happy with the way the guys came out and went about things tonight. I thought things went very smoothly in light of the fact that there were only four penalties called all night. Three of those were penalties of an aggressive nature, two pass interference calls and an illegal block. We had only one mental mistake all night on a false start," said Santiago.
The 'Jacks got the ball into the end zone on two occasions offensively. Thomas Williams scored from 18-yards out on the first series for the second unit. Williams ended the night with six carries for 34-yards and the touchdown. The sophomore from Fort Worth also added one catch for eight yards.
The second touchdown of the night came when senior quarterback Matt Williford connected with Tony Tompkins out of the backfield and the Port Arthur freshman scored from 16-yards out. Williford was 3-3 passing for 57 yards on the scoring drive, connecting with Marshall junior Paul Todd for 27-yards to set up the Tompkins score. For the night, Williford was 6-7 for 88 yards and the one touchdown.
Sophomore Michael Williams ended the night connecting on three of seven attempts for 29 yards, while redshirt freshman Zeke Dixon was also 2-5 for 23 yards. Freshman Royal Gill three six passes, connecting on two for 15 yards. He was also intercepted by Ryan Luedecke late in the scrimmage.
Tyler John Tyler freshman Cliff Edwards was the bright spot of the SFA ground attack carrying the ball four times for 23 yards. Colorado State transfer Alonzo Floyd also had seven carries for 18 yards, and Thomas Williams also added six carries for 34 yards and a touchdown.
SFA will scrimmage again Monday night with more emphasis placed on the first and second units. "We'll see more of the people that will be seeing a lot of playing time Monday night. Tonight was good in that we were able to evaluate a number of new people. Monday night we will start taking a closer look at the people we'll see playing August 31," said Santiago.
