Purple Edges White In Final Scrimmage Of Spring

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Lumberjacks closed out spring practice for 2002 Friday night before an enthusiastic crowd at Homer Bryce Stadium in a scrimmage that saw the purple team edge the white team 49-42. The purple team, comprised of most of the first units on both offense and defense scored seven times against the white team. The white team was given seven points per quarter and almost mounted a comeback in the final minutes as quarterback Michael Williams went from the purple to the white at halftime and led the white to a score with :12 remaining to cut the lead to the final margin.
Williams was impressive in the scrimmage compiling 273 yards threw the air on a 17 of 33 passing night. Williams connected with senior Courtnee Garcia for a pair of scoring strikes for the purple from 47 and 37-yards out for the purple team before moving across the field at halftime. Garcia ended the night with the two catches for 83 yards and two TDs, and also added a rushing touchdown on a nifty 23-yard reverse in the second half.
Garrett Cope, a walk-on quarterback for the white team connected with receiver Carl Price for a 60-yard score for the white team for his only completion of the night.
Matt Williford and Zeke Dixon also split time between the two teams, with Dixon getting a number of reps in his first live action as a collegiate player. Dixon was 5-16-1 for 112 yards, while Williford went 3-7-1 for 53 yards on the night. Dixon added 12 yards rushing on five carries, with Williford also adding 12 yards on four carries.
Tony Tompkins, a redshirt freshman from Port Arthur led the way on the ground for the 'Jacks with 81 yards on nine carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter of action. Thomas Williams also added a rushing touchdown on a one-yard score late in the scrimmage and ended the night with nine carries for 23 yards. Eric Chapman also carried 10 times for the white team for 34 yards.
The 'Jacks resume workouts in early August in preparation for the season opener, August 31, at Portland State.
